Falling into winter…

Hi everybody!
Few announcements regarding Obon’s wintertime plans.

  • First off, the trimming: we’ve decided, after much mulling that we’re going to take winter off at the Hillsdale Farmers’ Market. Our last market will be Sunday, Nov 19. But don’t fret, we’ll be back in early April.
  • Starting next week (11/16), we’re switching from a monthly to a weekly schedule for Sushi Nights at North Bar on Thursdays (but we’ll be skipping Thanksgiving).
  • On Tuesdays, beginning January 9th we’ll be setting up our outdoor food booth next to Refuel Coffee, in the parking lot at NUNM (see their hot food vendor calendar here).
  • This Saturday (Nov 11) we’ll be giving out small bites of our curry & rice at the NW Food & Wine Festival at the Convention Center. Find more details at http://www.nwwinefestival.com/.
  • Not set in stone, but almost guaranteed: We’ll be at the always fabulous Portland Night Market (at the time of this writing, they need to update their website!). This one takes place the weekend of Dec 1-3 (Fri & Sat 4-11pm, Sun 11am-4pm).
  • Also in the works, a prix fixe dinner at a TBD location for New Year’s Eve. More to come, so keep an eye out for the announcement & preview menu.
  • Finally, on Sunday, January 28th is the 22nd annual Mochitsuki Festival held at Smith Memorial Student Union on the PSU campus. We’ll be joining a ton of other vendors for one of the largest Japanese-centric events held in the Pacific Northwest.

To reiterate, ongoing, weekly:
Tuesdays, starting Jan 9th: NUNM campus, next to Refuel Coffee, 11-2pm, 49 SW Porter St
Wednesdays: People’s Food CoOp Farmers’ Market, 2-7pm, 3029 SE 21st Ave
Thursdays: North Bar, 6-10pm, 5008 SE Division St

Walk-ins accepted, but making a reservation is recommended. To do so, simply email us (info@obonpdx.com) with:

1) Your name.
2) Number of people in your party.
3) Time you’d like to arrive. We’ll confirm with a time as close to your requested as possible.
4) Any allergies or special requests.

True Portland Book Launch Party @ Reverend Nat’s Cider Taproom
21+ 1813 NE 2nd Ave, Thursday, June 22nd
The book’s author, Teruo Kurosaki, and his collaborators, will be traveling from Japan to Portland for the party. We’ll be there with a limited menu to form a mini-marketplace with these other fine establishments: Noraneko, Marukin Ramen, Yume Confections, Jorinji Miso, Kiriko Made, Wanpaku Natto, Seisuke Knife, and Umi Organic.

Looks like we’ll be popping up again this week! This time at North Bar, on SE Division @ 50th. For your enjoyment, we’ll be there from  6-11pm, an excellent time slot for all your social needs. Stop in, say hi & sip a refreshment & some curry udon or something. We can’t wait to see you!

Here’s to trying to help spring come along!
We’ve got two popups scheduled at Portsmouth Pantry (5003 N Lombard St). Saturdays March 25  & April 15 from 5-10pm.
As usual, you should try to reserve with us beforehand, but we will be accepting walk-ins as well (unless we fill up).
If you’d like to rsvp, tell us:

  1. Your name
  2. Number in your party
  3. Time you’d like to come
  4. A contact number, in case something comes up last minute

On Friday, March 31 we’ll be doing something different at North Bar (5008 SE Division St). 6-11pm

…it’ll be different for us because it’s our first time doing anything at a functioning bar (hence NO reservations) & it’s our 1st event, that’s not a farmers’ market, in the South Eazy. So excited!

er, never mind…

So ya, we will no longer be popping up at Vtopia on Mondays. Sad to say, but doing them turned out to be a bad idea. It’s funny, we have this annoying tendency to do things until it is abundantly clear that we have NO business doing said things. As we knew awhile ago, we simply weren’t bringing in enough customers to justify being there every week for the last three months.

That said,  we will be doing a couple of popups at our old haunt in N Portland, Portsmouth Pantry, the first, Saturday 3/25, the second on Sat 4/15. Sign up for our popup newsletter, on the right panel of this blog, to find out further details.

Valentine’s Day Dinner at Tabor Bread

We’ve come up with some really unique dishes with Chef Elona Trogub of the Witchn Kitchn. Many of the dishes included in this 6 course meal will be cooked in Tabor Bread’s massive wood-fired oven. The $75 charge gets you beverage pairings, potions & covers gratuity.
